You may have seen
the TODAY Show segment this week about "house burping." It is the American name for a German practice called
lüften, where people throw open their windows several times a day to flush out stale indoor air. Even in winter. Even when it is freezing outside.
When I saw the story, I smiled. America is finally waking up to what you already know: indoor air quality matters.
Why This Conversation Matters
The Germans have it right: fresh air is foundational to health. Our modern, sealed homes trap contaminants. VOCs off-gas from furniture. Mold spores multiply. Cooking fumes linger. The EPA reports indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
Opening windows helps. The air quality expert on the TODAY Show recommended ten minutes at a time. That is sensible advice for most people.
You, however, are not most people.
You Chose a Better Way
You don’t have to burp your house when it’s cold outside, then spend more money to crank up the heat. You do not have to worry
about outdoor pollutants, wildfire smoke, or allergens drifting in with the breeze. You do not have to compromise between comfort and clean air.
While millions of Americans are just discovering that indoor air quality is a problem, you are already living with the solution.
