A message from Bruce Somers — About HEPA Filters

We like to say that WellisAir units are "beyond HEPA" - but what does that mean exactly? It's my passion to explain, because I've used just about every HEPA filter there is in my quest to breathe clean air in my home!

 

First, a few words about HEPA filters in general. All HEPA filters require unobstructed rooms to effectively create the airflow needed to circulate particles through their filter, but typically there are dead spots in most rooms which make this difficult in real world situations. And, until they are trapped on the filters, these particles are constantly floating in homes carrying contaminants such as dander, pathogens, VOCs, allergens, etc. 

 

And then there's the issue of changing filters with HEPA. If you wait past the recommended filter change period, the contaminants on the filter can actually get reintroduced into the home environment with some HEPA filters. And with all HEPA filters, it is very important to take the HEPA unit outside, and then wear goggles, gloves, and a mask in order to avoid re-contaminating your home or worse getting sick from the live pathogens still found on the filters.

 

Lastly, HEPA units are loud. If you're like us, we used to turn our units to 50% because they were too loud. Unfortunately, the fan speed and the efficacy do not have a linear relationship. Thus, turning your fan speed down to 50% can result in efficacy drops to 30% or lower. If you turn your fan speed down to 25%, you might as well turn it off and save the electricity.

 

And it's also noteworthy that HEPA filters aren't able to offer any significant protections against gaseous VOC's! So all of the dangerous pollutants that are found in the house such as Formaldyhyde, or Perchloroethylene, or Benzene could still be found in the air you're breathing if you're relying solely on HEPA. See what the EPA has to say about these dangerous gaseous contaminants!

 

Instead, WellisAir actively sends out Hydroxyls (OH), the same molecules found in abundance in the air we breathe outdoors. These molecules are nature's immune system that neutralize VOCs, odors, smoke, viruses, bacteria, mycotoxins and other pathogens. This is essential, because the air inside most homes is unfortunately up 5 times more polluted than outdoor. So, with WellisAir, you know that any particles you breathe in are free from contaminants. 

 

And, there are no filters to change. Yes, there is a cartridge that needs to be swapped out every 90 days, but it's as simple as opening the cartridge door, pulling the expired one out, and putting in a new fresh cartridge. No need to wear goggles, gloves or a mask. And no fear of any contaminants being reintroduced into your home or body, because they've all been killed or neutralized. Also, WellisAir has a small fan (about the size of a fan found in a laptop) that is whisper quiet. Finally, WellisAir only draws 3.6 watts resulting in about 25 cents of electricity usage per month.
